The Voice of Historic Downtown Mount Vernon, Ohio

An Ohio Main Street Program

National accreditation was bestowed on the Heritage Centre Association of Mount Vernon, after an annual review evaluating our growth and contributions to the community over the past year. It enables the HCA to be named a National Main Street program.

State accreditation had been previously achieved from Heritage Ohio, earning HCA some recognition at the state level. “That was a ton of work ... a monumental undertaking,” said Corby Wise, president of HCA. “We have a really outstanding city that backs us. Most of us are from here, and we all want to see us succeed.”

Heritage Ohio is the statewide Main Street coordinating program in Ohio, designed by the National Main Street Center. It exists to help groups save the places that matter, build community and live better. They accomplish this by operating the Ohio Main Street Program; advocating for initiatives such as the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit program; advocating for sustainable, community-enhancing policies; and conducting the Revitalize Ohio program.

Among the many yearly efforts in the Heritage Centre Association are the First Friday events; Divas and Darlings, a fund-raising auction and dinner for women; and the annual Christmas parade and auction, which raised $4,800 in 2010.

“The Heritage Centre Association is an incredible program,” said Jeff Seigler, director of revitalization with Heritage Ohio. “It has had a profound impact on the residents of Mount Vernon and their efforts are commendable. This is sort of an acknowledgment that the local program is recognized nationally. It’s an indicator that they are doing very well.”
